Good news, ARIADNE WU! You have been selected as a potential FRANCHISEE for the most exclusive FRANCHISE in the GALAXY.
YES, ARIADNE! You too can join a select, privilege group of people. You too can learn how to GROW YUAN. Genuine real yuan!
And so on, down the page. He had a solid couple of paragraphs in the Maserati vein, and after some thought had added another on how, instead of actually spending your money, you could put it in the bank and spend your evenings looking at your bank book (his personal preference). Some of the letters heâd read online described in detail the processes involved in making the promised fortune, so he had added some words on that as well, based on remarks from Dad and Daffy about nutrients, and assuring the reader he would receive copious instruction and support. It was a solid letter, he felt: attractive and appealing to the right person.
He looked outside. His parents were approaching the south grove. âSheâs going to be so sorry one day.â
His gaze fell on the letter again. Should he sign it Michael Chen (or Wong or Sung)? He frowned over this for a while, then made up his mind and typed âMichael Smith, Franchisor.â
A few minutes later, as he was running the letter through the spell checker once more, he heard Dad calling from outside. He went over to the window seat.
âMichael! Come on out of there. Iâve posted bail for you.â
Mike waved and returned to the computer to finish up. He put on his coat, zipping it up with his arm next to his side, securing an envelope. He listened: his mother was coming upstairs and he waited until he heard their bedroom door close at the end of the hall, then he clattered downstairs, rummaged through a drawer in the den for a stamp then slipped outside, found his bike and headed off to the ferry. There was a box for outgoing mail at the marine supply store.

George had not had an easy time securing Mikeâs release. Jane had been furious and heâd let her vent as they walked through the orchard to the grove. Once there she had to lower her voice because of the trees. George took the opportunity to examine one or two branches. The first sign of anything amiss with a money tree was a yellowing of the leaves.
When Jane had finished describing Michaelâs behavior, he said nothing for a minute or two. âDid he ever tell you about his deal with David?â he asked finally, and that set her off again.
âNo, and I wish youâd stop encouraging him. We told Daffy she couldnât be a terrorist until she graduated, and the same went for Michael and his bloody franchises.â
âDaffy came to her senses because we let her try. Why not do the same with Mike?â
Jane said nothing, so he reverted to his first question. âHe said he was pleased with his deal. So I asked him: who soaked whom?â He glanced at her with a smile.
